The following was posted on the Together with Tory website under the title of "Reality Check".
According to Rueben, this is democracy. Unfortunately for Rueben, he hasn’t always thought this way. Here’s Article 24 of the PC Party Constitution – it’s the same as when he was Party president:
24.1 At the first general meeting of the Party following an Ontario general election in which the Caucus does not form the Government of Ontario, and only at such meeting, the delegates shall be asked by secret ballot: “Do you wish to have a leadership election?”
24.2 In the event that more than 50% of the votes cast are in the affirmative, the Executive shall call a leadership election and such election shall occur at the earliest convenient date as determined by the Executive.
PC MPP Lisa MacLeod said: “The Constitution is approved by a democratic vote of PC Party members. It is not a buffet where people can pick parts they like and ignore the rest. We believe in democracy in our Party.”
The sections of the constitution referred to above are very relevant, unfortunately for Tory supporters they simply refer to the automatic trigger of a leadership race in the event of a 50% +1 YES vote on the question; "Do you wish to have a leadership election?". In no way do they suggest that less than that figure in some way amounts to an endorsement by all of the Leader.
Equally relevant to the debate is a section of the constitution that Together with Tory omitted:
25.1 Within eighteen months of any event referred to in Article 23 or 24, or at the request of the Leader, the Executive shall call a leadership election.
Rather than assuming that a Leadership race would be divisive, why not embrace it as an opportunity to revitalize the party with both new people and ideas that such a race would produce.
If John Tory intends to remain as Leader of the party with a vote of 50% +1 for the NO side, he should declare this in unambiguous terms so that members are clearly informed when they vote.
All things considered, we think Together with Tory's post title is appropriate to this discussion - "Reality Check".
